Born in Santo Domingo, Dr. Luis Alcántara Abreu is Founder and 1st Graduate of the Orthopedics and Traumatology Graduate of the Central Hospital of the Armed Forces as a specialist in Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology with special dedication to Articular Replacement surgery. It also has a Fellow in Pediatric Orthopedics (Children’s Orthopedics Hospital, Caracas, Venezuela); He has a Diploma in Hospital Management INTEC-HGPS and a Master’s Degree in Quality Management in Health UNIBE, as well as Instruction courses in Hospital Management for Disasters and Evaluation of Non-Structural Vulnerability (PAHO); Training and Management of Teams in Human Resources; and Training in Criminology, Criminalistics and Forensic Traumatology.
In 2006, he created and developed the first Minimally Invasive Arthroplasty and Surgery Unit in the Dominican Republic at HGPS. He is also a Medical Advisor of the Diplomatic Mission of the United States of America, Medical Advisor of the Major League Baseball Player Association (MLBPA), Active Member of the Dominican Society of Orthopedics and Traumatology, in addition to being an International Affiliate of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons. For more than a decade he was Professor of the Department of Orthopedics for the Faculty of Medicine of the Universidad Iberoamericana (UNIBE).
General Coordinator of Operation WALK® Boston – for Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic) at the General Plaza de la Salud Hospital, a program that annually benefited Dominican patients with limited resources, who were intervened for joint replacements of both hips and knees.
From 2008 to 2015, this program has intervened more than 350 patients with complex knee and hip replacements for about 600 recovered joints.

Likewise, he lectures on topics of specialization on multiple occasions in the country and has been an exhibitor abroad where the theme of “Minimally Invasive Hip Replacement” as a guest of honor in Tegucigalpa, Honduras for the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Honduran Society of Orthopedics and Traumatology. Xi’an, China with the theme “Articular Replacement Surgery in developing countries”. Cartagena de Indias, Colombia with the theme “Simultaneous Bilateral Hip Replacement” as an international guest (speaker / guest country ELCCR 2019).
