50 years of the Espaillat Cabral Institute

The Espaillat Cabral Institute is celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of its foundation. In 1970 the Institute opened its doors as the first ophthalmological clinic in the country, also becoming the first Dominican health center dedicated to a single medical specialty: the care of the eyes and the entire visual apparatus.

Throughout its history, the Institute has been a pioneer in offering the most advanced diagnostic and surgical techniques in all branches of ophthalmology. Its complete and modern physical plant includes smart operating rooms specifically designed for ophthalmological
surgeries.

With a medical, technical, and administrative staff of academic excellence, specialized research, and professional practice, the Espaillat Cabral Institute managed to be the first Dominican health center –and the first outside the United States– to receive the international accreditation of quality in health from the Healthcare Facilities Accreditation Program (HFAP). Achieving this recognition is only possible after complying with a rigorous multi-year process that certifies compliance with numerous stages of independent external evaluation, including audits of the highest technical and scientific level.

With the HFAP certification, the Espaillat Cabral Institute consolidates itself as a leader in the quality of ophthalmic medical services in the Latin American and Caribbean region, receiving patients from neighboring countries who come to its facilities to evaluate their ophthalmic health and find a solution to their visual problems.

It is also affiliated with the Latin American Association of Cataract, Anterior Segment and Refractive Surgeons (ALACCSA-R), an international institution currently chaired by the Medical Director of the Institute, Dr. Arnaldo Espaillat.

As part of its social commitment, the Espaillat Cabral Institute also serves patients whose economic condition limits or prevents their access to specialized health services in the private sector, providing specialized care and cutting-edge technology.

Another area of social responsibility the Institute has assumed for five decades is the contribution to the formation of high-quality human capital in our country, sharing knowledge and good practices with new generations of ophthalmologists. Since its founding, its facilities have served as a permanent classroom for physicians seeking excellence in all branches of ophthalmology. Currently, the Institute offers a Specialty Program –Fellowship in the world of graduate-level medical education– in Cataract and Refractive Surgery, as well as medical internship programs and rotation of medical students.

The Espaillat Cabral Institute maintains a complete webpage with institutional information and covering relevant topics for the public, including advice on protecting the eyes and maintaining the visual health of children, adolescents, adults, and the elderly. Through its social networks, the Institute informs its patients and the general public about various ophthalmological conditions, possible symptoms, and the types of treatment available for the different conditions that can endanger the eyes and the sense of vision.

These achievements confirm that the Espaillat Cabral Institute reaches its first half-century positioned at the national and regional ophthalmological vanguard, offering its patients the highest international standards of specialized medicine, with human, ethical, and personalized treatment.
